This week we are exposed on how to cataloging using International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD). Below are some lecturer notes on ISBD.
SPECIFICATION OF THE EXAMPLES FOR THE CONSOLIDATED EDITION
The examples are arranged alphabetically by language of cataloging. This is followed by an index. All areas of description are assigned to each example in table format as follows:
Area 0: Content form and media type area.
Area 1: Title and statement of responsibility area.
Area 2: Edition area.
Area 3: Material or type of resource specific area.
Area 4: Publication, production, distribution,etc.,area.
Area 5: Material description area.
Area 6: Series and multipart monographic resource area.
Area 7: Note area.
Area 8: Resource identifier and terms of availability area.
For example in table format:

Descriptive levels of detail
There are 3 levels of description based on the porpose of the catalog or catalogs for which the
entry is constructed. The 3 levels are:
1. First Level
2. Second Level
3. Third Level
First level of description
Title proper [GMD] / first statement of responsibility, if different from main entry heading in form or number or if there is no main entry heading. –Edition statement. – Materials (or type of publication) specific details. – First publisher, etc., date of publication, etc. – Extent of item. – Note(s). – Standard number.
Example of First Level
Gone with the wind. – 60th anniversary ed. – Harper,c1984. – 1074 p.
* School libraries in Malaysia agreed to use the 1st level
Second level of description
Title proper [GMD] = Parallel title : other title information / first statement of responsibility ; each subsequent statement of responsibility. – Edition statement. – Materials (or type of publication) specific details.
– First place of publication : first publisher, etc., date of publication, etc. – Extent of item : other physical details ; dimensions. – (Title proper of series) – Note(s). – Standard number.
Example of Second Level
Gone with the wind / Martha Mitchell. – 60th anniversary ed. – New York : Harper, c1984. – 1074 p. : map ; 28 cm.
* Large libraries in Malaysia agreed to use the 2nd level
Third Level of description
Includes all elements set out in the AACR2 rules that are applicable to the item being described.
After En. Razak gives lecture on how to cataloging using International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD), we visit the faculty library to do the cataloging.. People always said "Practice Make Perfect!!!!" So lets make the cataloging =D.
